Celebrating Dental Health Month
Students in kindergarten through third grade had the opportunity to learn valuable lessons about keeping their smiles healthy and bright, thanks to a fantastic visit from students at the Joint Base Andrews Dental Clinic.
The resident dentists engaged students with interactive presentations, demystifying the world of dental care and making learning fun. But the real magic came from the students themselves, who absorbed the information and shared some memorable insights.
One of the most memorable takeaways for third grade students was the concept of “sugar babies.” “Sugar babies are real and can make cavities on your teeth,” declared Addy. Students learned that sugar, in any form, can be like tiny “sugar babies” feeding the bacteria in their mouths, ultimately leading to cavities.
This lead to the question of where does the bacteria come from? Students like Max were quick to explain that “milk can make you have cavities because it has sugar in it.”
The importance of preventive care resonated with students. “Drinking water is important to wash the sugar off of your teeth,” Breslin explained.
The most impactful takeaway was the students’ commitment to making positive changes, “I’m going to not eat as much candy,” Breslin promised.
We are incredibly grateful to the Joint Base Andrews Dental Clinic students for volunteering their time to help students learn about healthy dental habits.
